RED-AND-WHITE CHARMS WELCOME SPRING
In Bulgarian folk stories, Baba Marta (or Granny Martha – the oldest and wisest of the months in the year, and the only sister amongst 11 brothers) clears up the mess of winter and ushers in spring. Tradition requires that everybody – especially children – wears MARTENITSA on 1st March, to help start the new cycle of the seasons in good mood. The colour white represents cleansing – after the dark and heavy winter months, while red represents energy, which will be needed for the days ahead. When people see the first stork or hear the first coocoo, they tie their MARTENITSA on a fruit-bearing tree, and make a wish for health and prosperity.
